Have you had your first snow of the year yet? We’ve had one snowstorm back in November, and a couple dustings. The kids are itching to get outside to make snowmen, snow angels, and go sledding! This is the first year we decided to really put up all the holiday decorations, and they discovered snow globes. Of course they are in love with shaking them to see the “snow” fall, but having them shake glass balls is giving me anxiety. I started thinking, “how are snow globes made?”, and decided maybe we could tackle it for craft time to make a homemade snow globe with a book pairing! I went with a new lift-the-flap, What is Snow?
What You Need to Make Your Own Snow Globe
- Plastic snow globe containers (I found awesome ones at the dollar store!)
- Cute winter themed figurines
- Water
- Glycerin
- Glitter
- Hot Glue Gun
Time for FUN
This make your own snow globe craft project needs to be a 2 day project! That is because the hot glue needs to dry before submerging it in water. We had stopped at Michael’s Craft Store to pick out some cute little figurines and trees for our globes. The plastic globes from the dollar store had a perfect insert to help keep the water sealed tight inside. We started on day 1 with me hot glueing the figurines and trees onto the inside base of the globe.
If you know me by now, you know that on day 2 of making our own snow globes, which involved glitter, I contained my kids in our learning tower. Here is the fun part! Pour water into the globe part (leave enough room so it won’t overfill when you pop the base with your figurines inside. Add a little glycerin to help slow down the glitter falling when your kids go crazy shaking.
We added some white iridescent “snow” glitter and a little silver glitter. Get creative and add any color glitter you like! Next put the pieces together. The make your own snow globe kits from the dollar store were pretty simple. I popped the inside pug with the hot glued characters in, then twisted on the plastic safety cap. That’s it! Now you have a beautiful homemade snow globe that you won’t have constant anxiety over your kids dropping!
Let’s Read our Snow Book!
This is the second book (What are Stars was the first), from this particular series I am featuring. The very first questions and answers books are simple lift-the-flap books that are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. At that age, kids have so many questions, and this is a great way to feed their curiosity by giving them an interactive piece to lift to learn their answer! Making homemade snow globes went perfectly with our What is Snowbook!
You can discover facts about snow, including what it’s made of, shapes of snowflakes, and ideas for different activities you can do with snow! I even learned that snow isn’t really white, and the biggest snowflakes are the size of a beach ball!
You’ll have fun exploring all the facts about snow in this fun and interactive book with your preschooler or toddler. Interactive books like this one are actually my number 4 tip on making story time fun! Books with moving parts and interactive pieces can even help the wildest kids sit still for story time.
