My kids LOVE monsters. Well, they love the silly, goofy monsters with weird shaped bodies, googly eyes that are friendly and don’t hide in their closet. Once we discovered the young graphic novel style series Billy and the Mini Monsters, my kids loved them even more. Soon, my wild 4 year olds were sitting still for 15-20 minutes while I read about the silly and mischievous monsters living in Billy’s sock drawer. They would beg me to read book after book (I caved and bought all 9 books in the series), and I decided we needed to make our own monster craft. I thought a make your own monster craft project would be a perfect pairing for our favorite new monster books!
What You Need for your Monster Craft!
- Construction paper in a variety of colors
- Scissors
- Glue sticks
- Googly Eyes
- Markers
Let’s Have Some FUN!
You can get really creative with the prep work here to create some really silly and fun monsters. Use your scissors to cut monster bodies in a variety of shapes and colors. Cut strips for arms and legs (keep them long), and smaller shapes for hands and feet! I also cut out some small squares and triangles to use as teeth.
I let the kids loose with artistic freedom for their monster craft to choose their monster body & parts! Fold the long arm and leg strips like accordions to give them more movement and use a glue stick to attach to the monster body. Glue sticks can also be used to attach hands and feet. I love the self-sticking googly eyes ever since the day of our easter chick craft. I let the kids go crazy add a few to their monster heads wherever they land (monsters can have eyes everywhere right?)
We used marker to draw faces, and hair and finished up by adding teeth! After finishing our first monsters, we had so much fun that everyone made a few, and none of them looked alike! End result? A really silly, fun and unique group of monsters! Monster crafts for preschoolers like this are such a great way to express creativity!
Let’s Read our Monster Books!
I was on the hunt for a fun chapter book series for read aloud time with my kids. While I love picture books, I also love snuggling up for a longer period of time with my kids to read. Reading aloud books above their age level helps to expose them to new vocabulary, explore different experiences, and understand more complex ideas! After our monster craft, we snuggled up to read one of the fun early graphic novel style chapter books from the series Billy and the Mini Monsters!
Billy is just an ordinary kid, who one day discovers 5 mini monsters living in his sock drawer. The monsters go on a variety of adventures, causing trouble. Billy (and eventually his little sister Ruby), have to use some critical thinking and problem solving skills to get out of some sticky situations and keep the mini monsters a secret and out of trouble.
The characters are funny (a monster who toots when he eats cheese is just the beginning), and creating silly voices for them really amps up the fun! After reading the first one (Monsters in the Dark), we had to read it 2 more times. Then I immediately had to buy the entire collection so we could read them all!
I hope you have some fun creating your own monsters to hang out with Fang, Gloop, Captain Snot, Trumpet, Peep & Billy! pssst if you want some halloween fun, check out their Halloween adventure!
