Before kids, my husband and I were travelers. We’ve spent time on numerous cruise ships, and Caribbean islands, as well as traveling the country as we completed race-cations across the US (none of which were a free vacation). Our honeymoon was the best by far, on the gorgeous island of St.Lucia. An all inclusive resort, scuba certifications and hiking the Piton mountains made it the most amazing vacation of our lives. Then we had twins. In case you don’t know (shocker!), traveling with twins is hard! No matter how much I tried to convince my husband that a cruise would be “sooooooo much fun” with infant twins, he (rightfully so) shot me down. I was beginning to forget how blue the water of the Caribbean was, and how the perfect Mojito tasted.
In June last year, I sat on pins and needles all weekend at Book Lady convention dying to know what the next incentive trip would be. I was seriously on edge. I envisioned a gorgeous tropical location where there was a swim up bar, a man who made me towel animals on my bed, and no crying babies in the room next door. And then they announced it. PUNTA CANA!! I just knew I had to earn this trip. For my sanity, for my marriage, for the pre-mom me still alive in there trying to survive. Guess what? I earned that free vacation, and you can too!
Adapt the Mindset that it will Happen
Research shows that the more you believe something to be true, the more likely your dream is to turn into a reality. Every day I talked about “My trip to Punta Cana in July,” even thought I had a long way to go to earn it. I told everyone I could about the amazing vacation I was taking next July. In my mind, I decided I was going, and that’s all there was to it.
Break it Down
You know what you want, how will you get there? In my case, UBAM gives us a breakdown of all the ways to earn travel points. Points for promoting, points on new recruits sales, personal sales. Looking at the big picture can seem overwhelming! When you have so many points to earn, and you’re starting at zero, it may seem like you’ll never get there. Breaking it down into small manageable chunks can help you celebrate the little successes along the way & help you to focus on “putting one foot in front of the other.”
Hustle
Since personal sales is the area I have the most control over, I chose to focus there. I pushed to grow my personal business every day. I looked to book more events (book fairs, vendor events, fundraisers) during the trip earning period. I worked hard to make sure I had a calendar full of parties (it helps I do them on facebook, so I can fit in 2 a night)! Putting myself out there at all those parties and events let me to new recruits joining my team, which helped me earn more points too.
Get Support
The more people I told about my goal, I knew it would help keep me accountable. So I told everyone. My mom (had to line up the babysitter! ), my friends, my Books on the Run facebook community. A small group of team mates started a group message to cheer each other on. We tagged each other on posts of beach scenery, celebrated each step along the way, and talked about what we would do when we got there.
Instagram/Social Media
Once you know where you are headed, stalk the location like you’re 19 and just met a fun guy at the bar. Follow them on instagram, scroll through the old facebook pictures, see what people have to say about it. Get yourself excited & amped up about your future travel plans! This will help you feel invested and excited. You will now find a way to make it happen, because after 20 instagram pictures with sandy beaches, tropical drinks and blue water, you NEED it in your life.
If I can earn a free vacation, so can you! Having an amazing product (the BEST if you ask me) to sell, makes my job as a book lady easy. You just need the focus, determination & drive to get there.
