If you are anything like me, you kind of live in fear over your children running crazy and yelling in the airport or on the plane or causing a screaming until you can’t think as you drive. Even though Trolls and Moana can keep my kids entertained on a tablet, my book lady head and heart knows I need to give them something better for at least part of the journey. Here are my best books for kids when traveling, and I promise they’re toddler, preschool and early elementary approved!
Sticker Books
Peeling stickers and designing anything from rocket ships and race cars to dressing princesses and creating nature scenes. These books are packed with stickers to keep little fingers and minds busy during travel. Kids can work on fine motor skills and parents can appreciate the mess free activity. Just keep an eye that the stickers are making it onto the page and not to the airplane tray table.
Lift the Flap Books
If you have a curious kid, these are awesome for feeding into that curiosity. Learn about airplanes, outer space, the human body and much more. Even answer some curious questions like “What is Poop?” and”How Do Flowers Grow?” Since there are so many flaps in each book, these are guaranteed to keep them busy on the plane or in the car. These are great travel books for kids because they teach you facts you didn’t know, so you end up smarter by the time you reach your destination!
Wipe Clean Books & Cards
Wipe clean means reusable fun! These books and card sets use a dry erase marker, so you can quickly wipe away their work and start over. Choose from fun activity based books, to educational ones likelearning the alphabet, spelling & telling time. My favorite books for traveling with kids are sets of wipe clean activity cards, which are easy to tuck into a bag pocket without taking up much space. Nervous about marker use on the go? Pick up some dry erase crayons! There are even a few travel specific options with activities to match your mode of travel.
Things to Spot
Kids will (hopefully) be quiet while they concentrate on finding objects on the pages of these themed books. There are options for toddlers, preschoolers and even early elementary. My favorites are vacation, pirate & animal themed books packed with colorful pictures! A few of these even contain stickers so you can enjoy the perks a little more creativity without the mess.
Activity Packs
These are awesome options for elementary aged kids, with puzzles, games and activities. They’re great for plane & car rides, and you can use any pencil or pen with them. My personal favorites are the braingames, 100 things to do on a car trip, and the academy series (perfect for telemetry aged kids to explore new careers).
