Before having kids, we loved having beach days. Once the daily chaos began of life with twins, our beach days were put on pause while we figured out how to navigate regular life. Eventually we felt brave enough, and our first trip was spent keeping babies from eating fistfuls of sand, keeping them under our shade, and prepping for the meltdown that was to come from a skipped nap time. Here are my tips for mastering (or just surviving) the beach with twins, especially in those infant and early toddler days.
Beach with Twins Success Tip 1: Containment
You need a no sand zone play area that the kids can stay contained in. This helps you to be able to set-up and take down your area without chasing escaping babies or toddlers. We loved our summer infant portable play yard! It was lightweight and easy to set up, and big enough for a couple babies or early toddlers to hang out with a few toys.
Beach with Twins Success Tip 2: Water Filled Snacks
Foods like grapes or watermelon have a high water content so they are great for keeping kids hydrated even when it’s hot out. If you have trouble getting them to drink enough, you shouldn’t have trouble with getting them to eat watermelon. Just make sure to have some wipes handy since watermelon is juicy & sticky!
Beach with Twins Success Tip 3: Baby Powder for Sand
This is seriously a magic trick. Sprinkle baby powder on your sand covered body part and the sand will smoothly and easily brush away. I’m still in awe that I never knew this trick until I became a parent.
Beach with Twins Success Tip 4: Use a Fitted Sheet instead of Blanket
Another great trick for containment is to use a fitted sheet with your beach bags, coolers, or other items in the corners. You’ll have a bigger area of space for a baby or toddler to play or crawl or even for you to stretch out.
Beach with Twins Success Tip 5: Arrive Early
I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to a schedule and nap time, so even skipping morning nap time was a little stressful for me. Arriving first thing in the morning means less crowds & easier set-up, better parking, and lower temps to get settled. This way, once your kids go into a full blown meltdown from exhaustion, you can pack it all up and they can hopefully get a little afternoon nap in the car on the way home.
Beach with Twins Success Tip 6: Bring a Canopy Tent
An umbrella will only give so much area of shade. Bring a large pop up canopy tent to give you a bigger area of shade, more boundaries to your beach space, and even a place to hang bags from up high that you want to keep out of kids’ reach!
Now sit back, and enjoy your new reality. You are no longer relaxing at the beach, reading a book or listening to music. You are on constant alert to keep these kids from eating sand or escaping to the ocean. Hopefully you brought some beach toys and can keep everyone entertained by attempting to build a sandcastle while your kids knock it all over. You can have an awesome time at the beach with twins, Just plan & prepare in advance and enjoy the fun!
